Part 2 Search for WW2 pillboxes near where I live. My son Ziggy helped me find the ones in Sarre, he was giving me the grid coordinates from his phone. About 28,000 pillboxes and other hardened field fortifications were constructed in Britain in 1940 as part of the British anti-invasion preparations of World War II. About 6,500 of these structures still survive. It is in effect a trench firing step, hardened to protect against small-arms fire and grenades and raised to improve the field of fire. They were popularly known as pillboxes, a reference to their shape. The great majority of Britain's static defences have been destroyed, a process that started even before the end of the war. Ditches and trenches have been filled, loopholes repaired, wood and metal re-cycled. Some of the pillboxes I found were so overgrown it was hard to enter them.
