This investigation focused on what happens to Irish male dairy calves before they end up on a livestock truck at Rosslare or Dublin port. We discovered that calves as young as 10 days old are sent to noisy marts where they spend many hours with no feed and in some cases no water. Calves that stayed at the mart overnight went without feed from the last feed they received on the farm to the following morning where they were given milk at the mart, a gap of around 23 hours. They then had no feed until they reached the control post in Cherbourg which was approximately 27 hours later. So in a 50 hour period these vulnerable, unweaned animals dependent on milk for all their nutrition only received one feed. We were delighted that MEP Anja Hazekamp was able to join us on the investigation, to see for herself what these tiny calves are put through, because dairy farmers do not want to care for the animals they breed.
