After the Blackhawks scored their 7th of the game, Jim Montgomery tried to pull Jordan Binnington for Joel Hofer...
But Binnington appeared to refuse to come off the ice, and Hofer was hiding down the tunnel to the Blues' locker room? #stlouis #goaliecoaches
Jordan Binnington involves speculation that he refused to leave the net when signaled for a goalie change during a recent game, a situation that stemmed from a miscommunication where his backup was not ready. #sportsentertainment
Recent Goalie Change Incident
During the St. Louis Blues' 7-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, head coach Jim Montgomery attempted to pull Binnington after the seventh goal was scored late in the 3rd period.
The Situation: Broadcast footage showed Montgomery signaling for a change while Binnington remained in the net. The backup goalie, Joel Hofer, was seen peeking from the tunnel to the locker room, leading to immediate speculation and "conspiracy theories" online that Binnington was being defiant or Hofer was "hiding"
The Explanation: The actual issue was a lack of communication and limited bench space at the United Center, which often forces visiting backup goalies to sit in the tunnel and not be fully dressed or ready at the bench. Montgomery confirmed that Binnington was aware of the plan and "had no issue" with being pulled, taking full responsibility for the communication breakdown.
What amounted to appear as just another goal for the Chicago Blackhawks in a rather forgetful 7-3 loss by the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday night turned into actual theatre.
Some may or may have thought it was a hilarious moment, some may not. But when Louis Crevier scored with 7:04 remaining in the third period that made it a 7-2 game, that's when the shenanigans happened.
Blues coach Jim Montgomery had seen enough, not by goalie Jordan Binnington, but by the mundane play of the players in front of his goalie again, Montgomery had summoned for goalie Joel Hofer to go and finish the rest of the game.
But here was the problem: Hofer was simply not ready to go in.
Binnington would finish out the game and it's a great reminder to find out what actually happened first and a great example to all goalies that no matter how much or how little time is left in a game, always be prepared:
