I have two standard poodle rescues, and they need a haircut every six weeks. That's a LOT of clippings! I use their clippings and also sheep's wool (of a quality too low to be used for other purposes) to bring 5 benefits to my garden:
1. provide nitrogen (and magnesium, calcium, iron)
2. aerate and provide loft to garden beds
3. hold in moisture
4. insulate plants and warm the soil
5. DETER SLUGS
It also brings a benefit to the planet: 6. I'm keeping a waste product out of the landfill and using it as a resource where it will naturally return to the Earth over a few years.
Permaculture has 12 Design Principles. #6 is Produce No Waste. I feel really good about using a waste product - dog hair or low-quality sheep's wool - in the garden to protect my plants and raise fertility. It helps my garden and keeps a totally biodegradable material out of the landfill.
