Abstract: This lecture will gauge the horizons of the Mesopotamian dream reality as depicted in cuneiform sources, especially the dream omens. An overview of the existing Mesopotamian 'Dreambooks' will be presented including the reconstructed dream omen series Zaqīqu II-IX elaborating on its intricate structure and content reflecting the primary concepts of the Mesopotamian dream reality. Furthermore, examples of the main organizational principles behind dream omens are provided and discussed, followed by an extensive investigation of the various interpretation strategies applied by the ancient scholars in this intriguing corpus. The position of the dream omens among other divinatory corpora in Mesopotamia will be commented upon followed by a discussion how Mesopotamian dream interpretation relates with other oneirocritic traditions in Antiquity.
