Today I want to talk to you about how to excel in the UK Bar Training Course exams, specifically in the areas of drafting and opinion writing. In this fourth and final part of the series, we'll delve into the essential tips and resources that helped me secure the top rank on the exam.

We'll begin by exploring the foundational knowledge you need to have before diving into the course. I'll recommend must-have books on contract and tort law, as well as a comprehensive checklist of core statutes. These resources will bring you up to speed on key principles and ensure you're well-prepared.

Drafting and opinion writing heavily rely on experience, so I'll guide you on how to rack up those crucial "air miles" through practice. We'll discuss common fatal flaws to avoid, such as negligence in identifying parties or causes of action. Plus, I'll share insights on the exam structure, including potential changes and timing considerations.

To ace the drafting portion, we'll explore a must-read book that provides a solid understanding of the fundamentals. I made the mistake of skipping this book initially, but I'll share why it's vital for navigating through the questions effectively. We'll discuss the importance of templates and precedents, emphasising the need to master the basics.

When it comes to opinion writing, I'll introduce a seven-step process that will streamline your approach. We'll cover stages like understanding client instructions, constructing a legal framework, and considering your advice. Additionally, I'll provide handy checklists of substantive areas of law and relevant statutes for your reference.

Exam preparation is key, and I'll emphasise the significance of studying the mark scheme. You'll discover a treasure trove of templates categorised by substantive areas of law, simplifying your revision process. I'll walk you through the basic structure of opinion writing, including the introduction, facts, liabilities, remedies, and conclusion, offering valuable tips along the way.
