Change player gender with the box bad clone glitch variation (Pokémon Crystal)

Описание: The annotations now after revision are a tad inaccurate as this was for one of the original Celebi glitches, but I feel the different methods should be distinguished.

The bad clone glitch (also known as Celebi glitch; the popular glitch that allows us to get Celebi without arbitrary code execution), which was discovered by Paco81 in fact has two main methods. The first variation is only for Crystal and involves withdrawing the FF byte in a terminated box list, but may be less reliable due to freezes.

The second more popular method, also for Gold and Silver involves using a ????? (00) from a stabilized bad clone at the Day Care to get seven Pokémon in the party, removing the party's FF terminator and allowing for byte shifts to a Pokémon's second species byte.

Both of these methods have Celebi Egg trick variants and Shiny Celebi glitches. (the Shiny variant for the box only method is documented by SloshedMail and the Shiny variant for the mainly party method is documented by gia).

We can use the former bad clone glitch method to corrupt the memory if no FF byte is present far beyond 01:AD11, the box Pokémon data which is stored in SRAM. If the corruption extends as far as 01:BE3D, you can corrupt the player's gender after resetting the game. When done with the male player withdrawing two Pokémon may shift a 01 into 01:BE3D, causing the player to become female. Likewise when done with the female player withdrawing one Pokémon may shift a 00 into 01:BE3D, causing them to become male.

Sadly I don't know much more about how to avoid the freeze, other than to place a Pokémon with 255 (FF) happiness or 255 HP at the bottom of the box list.

The former bad clone glitch works because when the Pokémon become Kingdra Cancel is removed. Thus it is possible to withdraw Cancel and remove the FF terminator.

I followed some specific steps by SloshedMail. If you cause the Kingdra to appear in a box with four good clones, one bad clone (unstabilized) and another Pokémon at the bottom then you can cause the data corruption in which the player's gender is changed.

Note although the player's gender is changed the palette of the overworld sprite isn't, similar to this glitch (   • Change Player Color  ), but can be done at a later point in game than the beginning.
