The Arizona desert heat can be dangerous for both people and wildlife. Even animals built for this environment sometimes find themselves seeking shelter in the wrong places—like backyards and garages.
In this episode, I’m called out to a home where a speckled rattlesnake was trying to escape the intense sun. This location happens to be part of my long-term study area, so after safely capturing the snake, I recorded data, tagged it for research, and relocated it to suitable habitat.
While en route to an additional call, Marissa responded to another—this time for a western diamondback rattlesnake hiding in a homeowner’s garage, also looking for a break from the heat.
This is what life in the Arizona desert looks like for people and rattlesnakes alike.
