Ryan: How's it going Ryan here at etrailer.com. Today on our 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan, we're going to be taking a look at and showing how to install the CURT Class 2 1-1/4" trailer hitch receiver. Now this is going to work great for you, especially if you already have those 1-1/4" accessories or if you plan on just primarily using it for a bike rack. And since it is a little bit smaller in diameter, in my opinion, it's going to look really good on the back of the Tiguan. It's just not going to take up so much space, and blend in really well.Since this is a Class 2, it's going to have that 1-1/4" by 1-1/4" opening. It's also going to have a reinforced collar, not only for extra strength, but it's also going to help give the hitch a more complete and finished look.
It's going to have the standard 1/2" size pin hole. Now keep in mind, a pin and clip does not come included, but if you need one you can find it here at etrailer. We're going to have loop-style safety chain openings, which are going to give us enough room to use just about any size hook that we might have. Now I did mention that this hitch is going to work really well for bike racks and other folding accessories. Here's another reason why. The end of the receiver tube is going to come out just behind the back bumper.
That's going to give us a lot of clearance. That way, most of the time, we're not going to have any issues getting our accessories folded up without contacting our back bumper. Now as far as the hitch's weight capacities go, it's going to have a 350 pound maximum gross tongue weight rating. That's going to be the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch. That's going to be the amount of weight pushing down on the hitch. That's going to be perfect for those one to three-bike racks.
As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating goes, it's going to be 3,500 pounds. That's going to be the amount of pulling on the hitch. That's the weight of your trailer plus anything that you might have on it. Now I do always recommend checking with your Tiguan's owner's manual to make sure you can pull that much weight.Overall, the hitch is going to be able to get the job done for you and, in my opinion, be the better looking one available. Now I'm going to give you a couple of measurements.
You're going to use these to help figure out which hitch-mounted accessories to get. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening is going to be about 12". Chances are pretty good, if you plan on doing some towing, you're going to need to get a ball mount with a rise. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper, it's going to be about 4-1/2". You're going to use that measurement to figure out if any folding accessories you might have can be stored in the upright position without making contact with the bumper. Now many of our customers said that they're really happy with how smooth the install went and that they had no problem getting it done at home in their driveway or even in the garage. It's really not that bad. I'd have to agree with them. Speaking of which, let's go ahead and put it on together now.To begin our install, we're going to be underneath our Volkswagen, and we're going to need to lower our exhaust a little bit to give us some room to work. Before we do that, what I like to do is take a strap and just run it from side to side. That'll just help give our exhaust a little extra support. Now on each side of our muffler we're going to have one bolt that is securing it to the frame. So we're going to need to take those out. I'll use a 13mm socket to unscrew it. Now if we move on to our frame rail, we're going to have two bolts that we need to take out. I'll do that using a 16mm socket. We want to hold onto these bolts. Once I have this one out, the other side's set up the same way so we'll just repeat this process over there. Now once those bolts are out, what I like to do is come back and spray the holes down with some penetrating oil. We'll just take a tube brush and just clean out those threads a little bit. Now with an extra set of hands, we can put our hitch into position. Go up and over the exhaust. We'll line up the holes in the hitch with the holes in our frame rail. Then we're just going to take that factory hardware that we removed. What we're going to do is get one on each side hand tight. That way, the will support itself while
