In chapter 11 of the Screwtape Letters, CS Lewis lays out four kinds of jokes from the perspective of the demon Screwtape: joy, fun, the joke proper, and flippancy. The joke proper has three subtypes, which I would contend are functionally two, making for five or six kinds of jokes, of which we are better off trying to avoid two or three: flippancy and the two subtypes of the "joke proper" that I collapse into one.
