Union leaders hopeful for steel jobs as Trump unveils Nippon, U.S. Steel partnership

Описание: President Donald Trump formally announced last Friday the deal between Nippon Steel and U.S. Steel. Now the impact this could have on the Ohio Valley is not a direct correlation, but local union leaders feel that it could be a catalyst for industrial development.

The partnership is expected to keep steel jobs in the U.S. There will also be an increased tariff on all imported steel.

"I think it's a very interesting deal,” USW Local 2911 President Mark Glyptis said. “My concern from day one was the security of the nation. I still have some concerns, but some of them have been addressed. The head of the board’s going to be American; the board of directors is going to be primarily Americans."

Glyptis feels the partnership is a step in the direction.

"If you put $14, $15, now they're saying $17 billion into the steel industry, it's going to be a good thing. It's going to help save jobs, no doubt of that. They're going to build a new mill. Don't know where that's going to go yet, but that's good for the industry. Overall, I think steelworkers around the country seem to be satisfied."
