Описание: During the Tudor Period, often women were treated as second class to men. Many men at court married women to secure power and influence, and also large dowry payments. Many of these marriages were organised by fathers who had no real care for their daughter’s happiness or feelings, and instead of this they were more focussed on advancing themselves further. Through marriages of their children, father’s could earn wealth, power and influence. For example the father of Anne Boleyn and her uncle received significant wealth and land following Henry VIII marrying his second wife, and then when Anne Boleyn was executed the Boleyn family also fell sharply from grace. But there was one poor woman who was married off to a man much older than she was, and it’s believed that her marriage was not a happy one. Elizabeth Stafford was the Duchess of Norfolk who was trapped in an abusive marriage to Thomas Howard the 3rd Duke of Norfolk, one of Henry VIII’s most influential and powerful courtiers. Their marriage caused a public scandal at one point because of how terrible Elizabeth was treated.
