France floods: Authorities issue red alerts amid anticipated rainfall

Widespread flooding across France on Tuesday forced many residents in small towns to ditch their cars and commute using boats.
Heavy rainfall from Storm Nils prompted the evacuation of nearly 1,600 people after the Garonne River spilled over. Multiple French departments issued red alerts for flooding, the highest warning.
"It's a bit catastrophic, especially for business owners, for all the people who have been affected. I think there's quite big damage in the town and in surrounding towns, so yes, it's sad to see this," said Florence Rajoie-Gauthier, a real estate agent in Cadillac-sur-Garonne.
Additional precipitation is expected on Wednesday, prompting France’s weather service, Meteo France, to maintain red alerts in some southwestern departments.
