महात्मा गाँधी जी का जन्म २ अक्टूबर 1869 को गुजरात पोरबंदर में हुआ था। इनके पिता का नाम करमचंद गाँधी और माता का नाम पुतली बाई था। इनके पिता ब्रिटिश राज समय काठियावाड़ की एक छोटी सी रियासत के दीवान थे।

गाँधी जी पूरा नाम मोहनदास करमचंद गाँधी था। 13 वर्ष की आयु में इनका विवाह पोरबंदर के एक व्यापारी की पुत्री कस्तूरबा से हुआ। कस्तूरबा का निधन 1944 ईस्वी में पूना की ब्रिटिश जेल में हो गया था।

इन दोनों ने 62 वर्ष तक वैवाहिक जीवन निभाया। गाँधी जी ने अपनी बेसिक शिक्षा पोरबंदर से पूरी की। इसके बाद गाँधी जी कानून की पढाई करने और बेरिस्टर बनने के लिए इंग्लैंड चले गए।

जब गाँधी जी 1891 में भारत वापिस आये तब इनकी माता का देहांत हो चूका था। गाँधी जी ने भारत आकर बॉम्बे में वकालत की शुरुआत की। पर उन्हें कोई खास सफलता नहीं मिली। इसके बाद गाँधी जी ने सन 1983 में एक भारतीय फर्म से 1 वर्ष के लिए दक्षिण अफ्रीका में वकालत का करार किया।

गाँधी जी ने अपने जीवन के 21 साल दक्षिण अफ्रीका में व्यतीत किये थे। 1914 में गाँधी जी दक्षिण अफ्रीका से भारत वापिस आ गए। इस समय गाँधी जी राष्ट्रवादी नेता व संयोजक के रूप में प्रतिष्ठित हो चुके थे।

गाँधी जी को भारत में प्रथम राजनैतिक सफलता बिहार के चम्पारण और गुजरात के खेड़ा के आंदोलन से प्राप्त हुई। इसके बाद गाँधी जी असहयोग आंदोलन की शुरुआत की। असहयोग आंदोलन को अपार सफलता मिली रही थी। जिससे समाज के सभी वर्गों में भागीदारी बढ़ गई। लेकिन फरवरी 1922 में हुए चोरा चोरी काण्ड के कारण गाँधी जी ने असहयोग आंदोलन को वापस ले लिया। इसके बाद गाँधी जी पर राजद्रोह का मुकदमा चलाया गया।

गाँधी जी को राज द्रोह के मुकदमे में 6 वर्ष की सजा हुई। ख़राब स्वास्थ्य के चलते सरकार ने उन्हें 1924 को रिहा कर दिया। गाँधी जी ने फिर नमक सत्याग्रह किया। इसमें उन्होंने दांडी यात्रा की।

भारत छोड़ो आंदोलन के तहत फिर से गाँधी जी को गिरफ्तार कर लिया। गाँधी जी की हत्या 30 जनवरी 1948 को नाथूराम गोडसे ने कर दी। गाँधी जी के मुंह से निकले अंतिम शब्द थे - हे राम।

गाँधी जी का स्मारक स्थल राजघाट नई दिल्ली में स्तिथ है।

Mahatma Gandhiji was born on 2 October 1869 in Gujarat Porbandar. His father's name was Karamchand Gandhi and mother's name was Putli Bai. His father was a diwan of a small princely state of Kathiawar during the British Raj period.

Gandhiji's full name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. At the age of 13, he was married to Kasturba, the daughter of a merchant from Porbandar. Kasturba died in the British prison of Poona in 1944 AD.

When Gandhiji returned to India in 1891, his mother had died. Gandhiji came to India and started practicing in Bombay. But he did not get any significant success. After this, in 1983, Gandhiji signed a law deal with an Indian firm in South Africa for 1 year.

Gandhiji spent 21 years of his life in South Africa. Gandhiji returned to India from South Africa in 1914. At this time Gandhiji had become distinguished as a nationalist leader and convenor.

Gandhiji's first political success in India came from the movement of Champaran in Bihar and Kheda in Gujarat. After this Gandhiji started the Non-Cooperation Movement. The non-cooperation movement was a huge success. Due to which participation in all sections of society increased. But due to the Chora theft case in February 1922, Gandhiji withdrew the non-cooperation movement. After this, Gandhiji was tried for treason.

Gandhi ji was sentenced to 6 years in the case of Raj Malhotra. The government released him in 1924 due to poor health. Gandhiji then performed the Salt Satyagraha. In this, he traveled to Dandi.

Gandhiji was arrested again under the Quit India Movement. Gandhiji was assassinated on 30 January 1948 by Nathuram Godse. The last words that came out of Gandhiji's mouth were O Ram.
Gandhiji's memorial site is located at Rajghat New Delhi.
