I made steamed cabbage and fish swai for our Jamaican brothers and sisters who are passing through tough times and trying to find their footing abroad.

A gentle, nourishing Jamaican meal — Steamed Cabbage with Swai Fish is the perfect balance of comfort and simplicity. Mild, flaky fish meets fresh vegetables and island spices in this one-pot dish that’s both wholesome and satisfying.

🌿 Ingredients (Serves 3–4)
• 2–3 Swai fillets (fresh or thawed)
• Juice of ½ lime or lemon
• ½ tsp sea salt
• ½ tsp black pepper
• ½ tsp paprika or pimento (optional)
• 1 tbsp coconut oil
• ½ medium cabbage, shredded
• 1 carrot, thinly sliced
• 1 small onion, sliced
• 2 scallions (green onions), chopped
• 2 cloves garlic, minced
• 1 tomato, chopped
• 1 sprig thyme
• 1 small scotch bonnet (whole or sliced lightly)
• 2–3 tbsp coconut milk or water
🍲 Directions (Simplified)
1️⃣ Rinse and season fish with salt, black pepper, and paprika.
2️⃣ Sauté onion, garlic, tomato, scallion, thyme, and pepper in coconut oil.
3️⃣ Add cabbage and carrots; steam gently with coconut milk or water.
4️⃣ Place fish on top, cover, and steam until cooked through (8–10 mins).
5️⃣ Serve warm with boiled yam, plantain, or rice and peas.
