PLEASE READ THIS - This is the second of two dance sequences from "Il Terrore dei barbari" (1959) (The Terror of the Barbarians), which was released as "Goliath and the Barbarians" in English-speaking countries.
This film was the fourth of the Peplum films made by Steve Reeves in Italy. Peplum is the name given to a genre of adventure or fantasy films set in ancient lands, usually featuring a muscle-bound hero, and are also known as Sword and Sandal epics. The name is derived from peplos, the ancient Greek word for tunic.
Steve Reeves played Emiliano, the wood-cutter who swears vengeance against the marauding hordes who murdered his father. Chelo Alonso, the beautifully exotic dancer seen in this clip, played Londo, the daughter of one of the barbarian chiefs. She was born in Cuba to a Cuban father and Mexican mother and attained fame as a dancer in Havanna before appearing as an exotic dancer at the Folies Bergère in Paris. There she was billed as "The Cuban H-Bomb", a title bestowed on her because of her unique blend of Cuban rhythms and burlesque bump-and-grind. The lovely Ms Alonso can be seen in several other Peplum films including "Son of Samson" (1960) with Mark Forest, and "Atlas in the Land of the Cyclops" (1961) with Gordon Mitchell.
Livio Lorenzon played Igor, the savage barbarian chief who lusts after Londo and Andrea Checchi played Delfo, Londo's father. Curiously, Alboino, the lord of the barbarians, was played by 55-year-old Bruce Cabot, the hero of the original "King Kong" (1933). The film was directed by Carlo Campogalliani.
I am always looking for new ideas for this series. If you have any suggestions please don't hesitate to drop me a line.
