Fibrinolytic drugs, also called thrombolytic drugs, are any medication that is capable of stimulating the dissolution of a blood clot. The most common indications for the use of fibrinolytic medications include acute myocardial infarction, and acute ischemic stroke. These types of drugs work by activating something referred to as the fibrinolytic pathway. This is important because it differentiates them from the anticoagulant drugs. There are several contraindications to fibrinolytic therapy related to potential bleeding issues or injuries. A formal checklist is used to determine if fibrinolytic drugs can be used safely.
