In 1995 I joined the Social User Interface team at Microsoft. Clippit aka Clippy was one of the Help Assistants that I animated.
The team's co-producer Maz Kessler came up with the idea of a paperclip character and Kevan Atteberry designed it (though I changed Clippy's "root pose" to make him look more confident and relaxed, like James Dean or Fonzie from Happy Days). I thought that a mute paperclip character would most naturally communicate by bending himself into shapes and symbols, like the tv cartoon character Tom Terrific. Happily, the rest of the team liked the idea, too.
During group idea sessions, cartoonist Mark Newgarden made quick drawings of Clippy's actions and facial expressions, many of which I scanned and used in the animation. I drew storyboards of Clippy's actions on paper, scanned the "extreme poses" and created the animation digitally, starting with vector tracings of my pencil drawings.
