The confusion comes from mixing up two different questions: how many years of independence India has completed and which numbered Independence Day it is observing. A simple comparison is that the day a child is born is the birth date, but the first full year is completed only on the next birthday.

There is no evidence that Modi wrongly identified the occasion in his official address. The Prime Minister’s Office described his Red Fort speech as being delivered on India’s 80th Independence Day, and the Press Information Bureau used the same wording. PMO’s official report confirms this.

“80th Independence Day” and “79 completed years of independence” are both correct. Saying that India completed 80 full years in 2026, however, would be technically incorrect; that milestone will be reached on August 15, 2027.
