The phone rings at 5:30 PM on November 1st, 2003. On the other end of the line, there is silence. Then, barely audible, a voice. A girl's voice. She sounds afraid, speaking in a hoarse whisper, as if terrified someone might overhear. Seven people are in the room when the call comes through. Seven people who all recognize that voice instantly. It's been over a year since they last heard it. Over a year since the girl it belongs to walked out of her apartment to visit her sick grandfather and simply vanished.
"I want to see Ah Gong," the voice says, using the affectionate Chinese term for grandfather.
But there's a problem. Ah Gong is dead. He died just three days ago. This phone call is coming in during the final hours of his funeral wake, after the family placed an obituary in the newspaper begging the missing girl to come home one last time to say goodbye. The caller claims she wants to come back. She says she's in Singapore, somewhere dark, somewhere she can't identify. And then she says something that makes everyone in the room go cold.
"Someone won't let me come back."
Between 5:30 PM and midnight that night, the family receives thirteen phone calls. Thirteen calls from someone claiming to be fourteen-year-old Tina Lim, who disappeared sixteen months earlier on a Saturday afternoon in June 2002. Tina, who left her home in Choa Chu Kang to make a simple visit to her grandfather's house in Jurong and never arrived. Tina, who vanished in one of the safest countries in the world, on a routine trip she'd made countless times before.
The police would eventually trace those calls to a residential home in Pasir Ris, on the opposite side of Singapore from where Tina disappeared. After interviewing the family living there, investigators concluded that Tina could not have made those calls from that location. The official explanation: they were hoaxes. Cruel prank calls targeting a grieving family.
But Tina's family refuses to believe it. They insist they know their daughter's voice. They insist that whoever was on that phone was terrified, desperate, and trying to tell them something. And more than two decades later, nobody has been able to definitively prove them wrong.
So what really happened to Tina Lim? Was she the victim of an abduction that has gone unsolved for over twenty years? Did those mysterious calls actually come from her, trapped somewhere she couldn't escape? Or is this case even darker than anyone imagined? These questions have haunted Singapore for more than two decades. And the answers, if they exist at all, remain buried somewhere in the silence.
