From completing Black Sabbath's Dio-era album in just 13 days to the grueling 14-month process behind Judas Priest's 'Redeemer of Souls,' producer Mike Exeter reveals the hidden production stories that transformed these iconic metal recordings.
This interview is part of the Heaviness in Metal Music Production (HIMMP) research project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), grant reference AH/T010991/1. Hosted at the University of Huddersfield, UK, the project examines the technological, cultural, and perceptual aspects of heaviness across the evolution of recorded metal music. Led by Dr. Jan Herbst and Dr. Mark Mynett, HIMMP brings together insights from leading producers, engineers, and scholars to document how production approaches impact the final sonic outcome. Through these interviews, the project creates valuable knowledge exchange between academic research and industry practice.
