I was really excited at the beginning of this year and went and bought a bunch of muscadines. I've never even had a muscadine but hey, when you're in the south, you grow muscadines!
Overall mine grew very slow this year even though I was hoping to get 10' down the wire in each direction. I think the biggest failure for me was the soil. I'm east of Dallas with black clay. I have tested it and it is very alkaline with nearly zero macro nutrients. I fertilize 13-13-13 on the first of every month and calcium nitrate on the 15th of every month however the soil was so alkaline that the plants didn't really absorb much of it. Now we're in August and it is too late to fertilize anymore however I did acidify the soil in hopes that the plants will continue growing the roots as we get closer to the winter. One reason not to push further growth at this point is because the new growth won't harden enough to survive a freeze in the winter. And yes, we get a freeze every year here in Dallas.
