SHORT VERSION (3 minutes):
• attempted sail from san francisco to Hawai...
Scorpio and crew (5) attempting to sail from San Francisco to Hawaii. The boat handled well. The winds were heavy so reduced the number of sails up and we reefed in the main but the rail was still in the water. The boat's port lights were hit by much more water than they saw while sailing around san francisco bay and water was dripping onto the beds. We were tempted to push through the heavy winds and soggy beds but that sounded like how most bad sailing stories start. We turned back to the West and docked in Santa Cruz in an attempt to seal up the port lights. A few days later we again attempted the Pacific but the port lights were still leaking. We collectively decided to postpone the trip for another time.
It was a GREAT experience regardless of not making it to Hawaii. It was my first time offshore on a sailboat. I was 30 at the time. The crew was in their 60's and the owner is in his 80's. Everyone besides myself had already sailed across or around the Pacific. It was exciting and interesting to see and hear how these guys sail.
