Italianate-style homes dominated urban housing between 1865-1885, thanks to pattern books. In San Francisco, thousands were built as SF experienced tremendous growth during the Gold Rush. Many of them managed to survive the 1906 Earthquake and Fire, despite being constructed of wood.
This architectural style started to go out of fashion in the 1880s, and was replaced by its flashy cousin, Queen Anne.
Architectural features of Italianate-style homes include low-pitched roofs with overhanging eaves, decorative brackets, tall narrow windows, and elaborate frames around doors and windows, many with cupola or tower.
Flat-front Italianates feature a wide projecting cornice to hide the roof line behind it. You’ll find many of this style of Italianate in the Western Addition and Pacific Heights neighborhoods, as well as single-story cottage versions in the Noe Valley and Potrero Hill neighborhoods.
Bay-windowed Italianates became the norm in the 1880s when lots sizes got smaller (as bay windows increased square footage) and are synonymous with San Francisco. Hundreds of them can be found in the Mission, a neighborhood built-out during the height of this style's popularity.
