BIG FAT GOOD NEWS FOR FATBIKING IN MANITOBA!
Introducing the First Fatbike Accessible Winter Multi-Use Trails in a Manitoba Provincial Park ... as of December 2018, Spruce Woods Prov Park has officially added Fatbikes to the Multi-Use winter trails at two locations: The Yellow Quill and Seton Trail Systems. Fatbikes can now share the trails with Snowshoers (some side) and XC Skiers (groomed for Classic Track side - to be avoided by the fatbikers).
The start of each trail has a 'Yield' Sign showing that Fatbikers yield to all other traffic and Snowshoers yield to XC Skiers.
While there are no specific guidelines posted (yet) for Fatbikers; if the trails have been recently groomed/packed on a base snow (like you would see on a skate ski track), then only a real fatbike (3.8 inches wide tires) and low tire pressure (8 PSI Max) will avoid the biker making ruts and not enjoying the ride due to lake of 'floatation' over the snow.
Huge thanks goes out to the Spruce Woods Prov Park staff and especially Lead Interpreter Jennifer Corvino of their recognition of the need for multi-use winter trails that include fatbikers (which is very common in Europe, some National Parks in Canada & the US, and more private resorts as well.
Big thanks to fellow fatbiking advocate and 'Friend of Spruce Woods' Chris Black for his volunteer activities in support of Spruce Woods and for being the demo fatbiker in this video.
