This 13 mile walk (9.7 from the 'official' start point of Union Wharf) was undertaken on an overcast afternoon with sunny intervals and a slight south westerly breeze.
It was about a mile from the station to the start point, via the town centre. Union Wharf is the terminus for the short Market Harborough arm of the Grand Union Canal's Leicester line. Its former warehouses are now apartments, and refreshment buildings.
The initial few miles is beside the canal and through residential areas prior to reaching pastures and fields.to reach Lubenham, with its horse riding heritage. Soon after, the mens' high security prison at Gartree is seen.
Lunch is had, with a slight detour, at St Andrew's church, Foxton, though a pub alternative is available, both in the village and at the nearby locks.
The locks, the longest and steepest flight staircase in England, are reached about 15 minutes later. Further refreshments are available here.
Thereafter, it's around 6 miles along the towpath of the Market Harborough arm back to Union Wharf.
An interesting and varied walk in the South East corner of Leicestershire, with good path surfaces today.
