Yes, "the detestable pounding and piping" was a real line in the story "Nyarlathotep" by Howard Phillips Lovecraft. I thought "hellish moon-glitter of evil snows" was also a pretty banger line myself. Fun fact: some people say that Nyarlathotep is based on Nikola Tesla! What do you think?
Nightmarish hellscapes of rotting worlds. Apocalypse visions. Prophecies. Turned-over tram cars. Cobblestone paths, in ruins. This story has everything, and I'm sure someone's already written about this, but -- it shares a ton in common with the prior Lovecraft story, "From Beyond." Both feature a mad scientist with a machine that grants people augmented vision with which they see Lovecraftian horrors and nightmarish landscapes. We also saw that in "Beyond the Wall of Sleep," but in that case, the narrator/protagonist was the machine-creator, machine-user, and was the one astral projecting/dreaming?
Do you pronounce it Nyar Lat Hotep, or Nyar Lath Otep? Do you say HOTEP or OTEP at the end? Let me know in the comments. I also regularly misspell Nyarlathotep as Nyarlothotep (two Os instead of two As) and I think that's just a me thing.
