When Saiba’s husband Aas Mohammad was killed during the #Delhiriots in February 2020, she was shattered. “He loved me so much,” she said. “This is something I can never get back.”
But the three years that followed were harder than she expected. Aas’s family demanded that she “divide” the government’s compensation money between all of them. “It is my children who lost their father,” Saiba pointed out, saying she also faced abuse from her in-laws such as being called a “prostitute”.
At least 26 women were left widows after the horrors of February 2020. Ten of them told Newslaundry stories just like Saiba’s – of the struggles they faced after their husbands died during the riots.
