This video follows on from the Whifflet video, train & bus hopping via Motherwell to Holytown railway station. A small, 2-platform DfT Category F "Small unstaffed" train station, it was opened in 1880 (as 'Carfin') at the same time as the Wishaw Deviation Line from Law Junction, though the line on which it actually stands (the Wishaw and Coltness Railway) is considerably older. Despite its name, the station is some 550 yards (500 m) from the edge of Holytown; instead it is in New Stevenston.

A few name changes have occurred over the years; in accordance with it being located between two junctions (westbound the lines to Shotts and Edinburgh or to Wishaw and Carstairs, and eastbound the lines to Motherwell, Cambuslang and Glasgow Central, and Whifflet and Coatbridge), the station was first renamed to Carfin Junction in January 1882, then Holytown Junction in June the same year, and finally to just Holytown in 1901. The station was opened to assist the coal mining industry; the mines are now long gone.

Despite the present junctions, today ScotRail services run mainly only via the Shotts line to Glasgow or Edinburgh. Two/three trains a day use the junction; one is the 06:00 Motherwell to Edinburgh Waverley service, and the other is a weekday service from Carstairs to Garscadden in the morning, returning from Anderston to Carstairs in the evening. These junctions are helpful in times of diversions however, including the random appearance of an Avanti West Coast service from Glasgow to London filmed in this video.
