Episode - 5 - The Penitential Act, Gloria, and Opening Prayer
LITURGY OF THE WORD
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of
the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
PENITENTIAL ACT
I confess to almighty God
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have greatly sinned,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done and in what I have failed to do,
through my fault, through my fault,
through my most grievous fault;
therefore I ask blessed Mary, ever-Virgin,
all the Angels and Saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord our God.
May almighty God have mercy on us,
forgive us our sins,
and bring us to everlasting life.
Amen.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
GLORIA
Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace to people of goodwill l l.
We praise you,
we bless you,
we adore you,
we glorify you,
we give you thanks for your great glory,
Lord God, heavenly King,
O God, almighty Father.
Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son,
Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
you take away the sins of the world,
have mercy on us;
you take away the sins of the world,
receive our prayer;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
have mercy on us.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.
WHAT IS LITURGICAL CATECHESIS?
It is how the Church prepares you to celebrate liturgy and reflect on a liturgical celebration by understanding the sacraments…liturgical catechesis is sacramental.
Introduction:
The Mass is the central act of worship in the Catholic Church and is divided into several distinct parts. The steps in the Mass are as follows:
Introductory Rites:
a. Entrance: The entrance procession marks the beginning of the Mass as the priest and other ministers enter the church.
b. Sign of the Cross: The Mass begins with the celebrant making the Sign of the Cross, invoking the presence of the Holy Trinity.
c. Greeting: The priest greets the congregation, usually with a phrase like "The Lord be with you," to which the people respond, "And with your spirit."
d. Penitential Rite: This is a moment of acknowledging sins and seeking God's mercy and forgiveness.
e. Kyrie Eleison: A Greek phrase meaning "Lord, have mercy," sung or recited.
f. Gloria: A hymn of praise to God, often omitted during Advent and Lent.
Liturgy of the Word:
a. First Reading: A reading from the Old Testament.
b. Responsorial Psalm: A psalm is sung or recited in response to the first reading.
c. Second Reading: A reading from one of the New Testament letters.
d. Alleluia: An acclamation before the Gospel is read (omitted during Lent when "Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ" is used).
e. Gospel Reading: The congregation stands to listen to the reading from one of the Gospels, which contains the words and deeds of Jesus Christ.
f. Homily: The priest or deacon offers a sermon, explaining the readings and their relevance to daily life.
g. Profession of Faith (Nicene Creed): The congregation recites it, expressing their faith.
h. Prayer of the Faithful (General Intercessions): Prayers offered for various intentions and needs.
Liturgy of the Eucharist:
a. Preparation of the Gifts: The bread and wine are brought to the altar as offerings symbolizing the people's lives and the work of human hands.
b. Prayer over the Offerings: The priest asks God to accept the gifts.
c. Eucharistic Prayer: The central prayer of the Mass, including the consecration of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ.
d. The Lord's Prayer: The congregation prays the "Our Father."
e. Sign of Peace: The assembly offers a gesture of peace to one another.
f. Fraction Rite: The breaking of the consecrated bread, symbolizing the sharing of Christ's body.
g. Communion: The congregation receives the Body and Blood of Christ.
h. Prayer after Communion: A prayer of thanksgiving and asking for grace to live according to the Eucharistic mystery.
Concluding Rites:
a. Greeting and Blessing: The priest imparts a final blessing.
b. Dismissal: The congregation is sent forth to spread the Gospel worldwide.
Catechesis on the liturgy helps the faithful understand the theological and spiritual significance of each step in the Mass and encourages active and meaningful participation in the celebration.
