Minister of Foreign Affairs Anita Anand announced options for Canadians seeking to leave the region amid the U.S.-Iran war in the Middle East on Wednesday.
The briefing comes after the U.S. and Israel launched a series of strikes against Iran starting Saturday. Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was reportedly been killed in the first wave of attacks, plunging the region into conflict as Iran retaliates against neighbouring countries with U.S. military bases.
"Of the almost 3,000 Canadians in Iran who have registered, 74 have requested assistance in leaving. Unfortunately, we have no ability to arrange ground transportation in Iran as we do not have diplomatic relations with Iran and we have declared the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.) as a terrorist entity under Canadian law." Anand said.
As of March 3, 2026, there are over 103,800 Canadian citizens and Canadian permanent residents registered as being in the Middle East.
