In Vedic astrology, combustion is important because it describes a planet’s proximity to the Sun. When a planet comes too close in ecliptic longitude, its light is overwhelmed by the Sun’s rays. Astronomically, this means the planet is on the far side of the Sun and therefore at one of its greatest distances from Earth. Symbolically, its energy becomes less embodied and more strained.

In the classical Deeptadi Avasthas (states of planetary condition), a combust planet is considered “afflicted” or frustrated. For Mars, combustion occurs when it is within 17 degrees of the Sun. Right now, Mars is only 8 degrees away—strongly combust—and has been for some time.

Used consciously, exalted Mars in Capricorn can bring stillness, emotional courage, and a witnessing awareness. Instead of reacting destructively, this energy can be purifying—helping you burn away inner agitation rather than externalize it.
