From the quotations to revise using flashcards, what to say about them, and working out Dickens’ message. I include information, definitions and/or examples of dramatic irony, tricolons, ascending tricolons, pathos and a bunch of other literary terminology. I also explore attitudes to poverty and crime - crucial parts of AO3 - context.
Quotations covered in this video:
“slowly, gravely, silently”
“shrouded in a deep black garment”
“it was a happier house for this man's death!”
“The whole quarter reeked with crime, with filth and misery”.
“It would have done you good to see how green a place it is.”
“I promised him that I would walk there on a Sunday.”
“choked up with too much burying”
I mentioned some extra quotations to take it further, and I wanted to include these but ran out of time:
"why wasn't he natural in his lifetime?
“He frightened everyone away from when he was alive, to profit us when he was dead!”
"Spirit, hear me! I am not the man I was" - Scrooge
“Oh, tell me I may sponge away the writing on this stone!” – Scrooge’s final words show he wants change
