In January 1959, Cuba’s revolution turned a basketball stadium into a courtroom and then into an execution chamber.
The footage shows the public trial of Colonel Jesús Sosa Blanco, a former officer under dictator Fulgencio Batista. He was accused of ordering executions and brutal reprisals against civilians during the war in eastern Cuba. As the new revolutionary government took power, thousands of people packed Havana’s Sports Palace to watch him be judged in front of a roaring crowd.
The trial ended in a guilty verdict and a death sentence carried out by firing squad at La Cabaña fortress just hours later.
What was meant to be justice became spectacle. And what began as liberation revealed the darker side of revolutionary power.
