I hike 15km from Glenorchy township to the Scheelite Battery and the State Mine lookout, return.
The Battery and Mine are located in the Whakaari Conservation Area on Mt Judah, was New Zealand's primary source of tungsten (scheelite) during both World Wars. Active from the 1870s to the 1960s, the site featured the Glenorchy Scheelite Battery and several mines, including the State Mine, that supplied crucial materials for hardening steel.
