Abstract:
The Russia-Ukraine Conflict comes at a time when China is already fighting downward pressures on the economy, while it has set an ambitious growth target for the year. In this special seminar, Dr Alicia García Herrero will discuss how the war will impact China’s economy, what the economic policy reactions of China’s authorities are likely to be, how China-Russia ties will develop in the short and medium run, and what the consequences for China’s economic relations with the rest of the world are likely to be.
About the Speaker:
Alicia García Herrero is the Chief Economist for Asia Pacific at Natixis. She also serves as Senior Fellow at European think-tank BRUEGEL, non-resident Research Fellow at Madrid-based political think tank Real Instituto Elcano and Senior Fellow of East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore. She is currently Adjunct Professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and member of the advisory board of Berlin-based China think-tank MERICS. Finally, Alicia is advisor to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s research arm (HKIMR) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) as well as a member of the board of the Hong Kong Forum and co-founder of Bright Hong Kong. Alicia holds a PhD in Economics from George Washington University and has published extensively in refereed journals and books. Alicia is also very active in international media as well as social media. As recognition of her leadership thoughts, Alicia has recently been nominated TOP Voices in Economy and Finance by LinkedIn.
About the Moderator:
Prof Bert Hofman, a Dutch national, is Director of the East Asian Institute at NUS and Professor of Practice at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy. Before joining NUS, he was with the World Bank for 27 years, 22 of which in Asia, and 12 of which on China. Prof Hofman was the World Bank Country Director for China 2014-2019, the Country Economist 2004-2008, and the Chief Economist for the World Bank in the East Asia and Pacific region 2011-2014. He also worked on Indonesia, the Philippines, Korea and Mongolia. Before joining the World Bank, Prof Hofman worked at the Kiel Institute of World Economics, The OECD and NMB Bank (Now ING). He has extensive experience in advising governments around the region on a wide range of development issues, and published on fiscal policy, debt issues, and China’s and Indonesia’s recent economic history.
