German Agricultural Minister Jochen Borchert has called on the E-U to study the safety of milk from B-S-E infected cows.
This follows revelations by British scientists last week that the disease may be transferred from cows to calves.
German concerns have been raised because scientists were unable to say if the disease was transferred in the womb or from the cow's milk
Germany's Agriculture Minister Jochen Borchert hosted a meeting of scientists and food experts on Monday.
They discussed last week's British revelations that B-S-E - or Mad Cow disease - may be passed on from cows to calves.
The initial tests were inconclusive on whether B-S-E was passed on through the womb or through calves drinking the cows' milk.
Borchert called on the European Union commission to carry out a study into the safety of milk from B-S-E infected cows.

(Translation): "In the light of the latest scientific evidence that BSE can be transmitted from cows to calves the German Lander (states) have agreed to ask the E-U scientific committee for further investigation. So as to also clear any possible doubt there might be with milk. The German government asks the E-U commission for a swift investigation and a quick application of the necessary measures that might be deemed necessary so as to see whether the existing measures are sufficient. It is possible that further measures will be needed".

But despite the possible link between cows and calves, he reassured German consumers, saying they had nothing to fear on the safety of German milk and other dairy products.
And he maintained Germany's firm stance on the screening of British cows.
SOUNDBITE: (German)
(Translation): "For calves from the United Kingdom where it has not been certified that there is definitely no BSE they will have to undergo tests and no further distribution will be allowed".
