Welcome to our latest update on the High Speed 2 (HS2) project, specifically focusing on the remarkable progress made at Birmingham’s Curzon Street Station as of March 31, 2025. In this video, we’ll delve into the technical advancements of this monumental infrastructure project and explore other key developments in Birmingham’s HS2 works. These developments showcase the significant progress being made in Birmingham’s HS2 works, contributing to the project’s overall success and the future of transportation in the region.
Birmingham Curzon Street Station: Engineering Progress
The construction of Birmingham Curzon Street Station is a cornerstone of the HS2 project, marking the first new intercity terminus built in Britain since the 19th century.
Additional HS2 Engineering Developments in Birmingham
Beyond Curzon Street Station, several other engineering marvels are underway in the Birmingham area as part of the HS2 project:
Birmingham Interchange Station, situated near the National Exhibition Centre and Birmingham Airport, is currently undergoing development. Designed by Arup, this station has received BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification for its sustainable features. Construction is expected to be completed by 2027, making it a pivotal hub that will connect different transport modes.
Bromford Tunnel Construction: The 5.6-kilometre twin-bore Bromford Tunnel is currently under construction to facilitate HS2’s approach into Birmingham. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) ‘Mary Ann’ and ‘Elizabeth’ are actively excavating the tunnel. ‘Mary Ann’ commenced its work in June 2023, while ‘Elizabeth’ joined the excavation process in March 2024. We anticipate tunnelling to be completed by autumn 2025.
Aston Church Road Overbridge Replacement: The existing Aston Church Road Overbridge is being replaced to accommodate the new railway line. To minimise disruption and enhance structural integrity, the new bridge was pre-constructed and successfully moved into position on August 14, 2024.
These developments highlight the significant engineering efforts underway in Birmingham as part of the HS2 project. The project aims to revolutionise rail travel and stimulate economic growth in the region.
