Artificial Intelligence presents powerful tools for the manipulation of public opinion in ways that can undermine democracy, among other by swaying elections. Deep fakes of politicians, and micro-advertising of political messages in particular have raised concerns. However, efforts to prevent this have also created powerful tools that autocrats can use to restrict free speech for purposes of democratic backsliding. Technological developments thus place democrats between a rock and the hard place. This session discusses how to protect free speech and liberal democracy in an age of AI.
