4 Ways To Be A BETTER Gardener This Next Year

Описание: Every gardener and garden is different, but I want to focus on the four things that just about all of us can work on.

COMPOST

Adding compost to your soil will massively improve your garden. Of course, making your own is awesome, but don't let that hold you back. You can also buy it or source it in some other way.

Adding organic matter to your soil - compost - will improve water retention and nutrient levels. Plus, it makes your soil all nice and fluffy! We use compost very heavily in the garden along with other things like manure.

MULCH

Building healthy soil is key, but you also need to protect it. A nice, thick layer of mulch will do all sorts of things for your garden. It holds in moisture, protects your soil, manages weeds, and breaks down to further improve your soil!

Adding fresh mulch to your garden at least once or twice a year will pay off big time, and it will continue to make your soil better each season. We've turned barren and clay dirt into a thriving ecosystem.

SHADE CLOTH

The first two are fairly common, but this is something that you don't see as often. Shade cloth and row cover - two different versions of crop protection - play critical roles in our garden.

Shade cloth just cuts down on some of the intensity of the sun. This is especially great for starting cool-season crops in the fall and even some summer crops like peppers. Shade cloth will be fantastic at helping you extend your growing season!

ROW COVER

The other crop protection item that we use is row cover. If shade cloth is like sunscreen, then row cover is like a blanket. It's especially useful for frost-sensitive plants and direct sowing or even baby seedlings.

It's also great for pest control. It keeps bugs from getting to your plants, and that's especially key for brassicas this time of year.

Both shade cloth and row cover are fairly new to me in my gardening journey. I didn't use either of them several years ago, but I learned how important they can be from professional growers. Just a little bit of each can help you so much this next year!
