Badami Cave Temples are a complex of four Hindu and Jain rock-cut shrines located in the Bagalkot district of Karnataka, India. Carved out of red sandstone cliffs during the 6th and 7th centuries, they represent the pinnacle of Badami Chalukya architecture.
Key Features
Cave 1 (Shaivism): Dedicated to Lord Shiva, featuring a famous 18-armed relief of Nataraja performing the Tandava.
Cave 2 & 3 (Vaishnavism): Dedicated to Lord Vishnu; Cave 3 is the largest and most ornate, containing detailed carvings of his avatars like Varaha and Narasimha.
Cave 4 (Jainism): The youngest cave, featuring intricate figures of Tirthankaras such as Mahavira and Parshvanatha.
Location:
Overlooks the Agastya Lake, an artificial reservoir surrounded by steep cliffs and the historic Badami Fort.
These caves are significant for being some of the earliest firmly dated Hindu temples in the Deccan and are currently on the tentative list for UNESCO World Heritage status.
