In this video, I unpack a pattern I’m hearing repeatedly, both anecdotally from leaders in the field and through recent research I conducted with physicians transitioning into leadership roles.

What we’re seeing is troubling:

Highly educated, experienced professionals step into new roles ready to contribute… and instead of being heard, they’re dismissed. Their expertise is minimized. Their perspective is framed as conflict. And before long, engagement erodes.

This isn’t just a physician issue.
This is an organizational issue.

When people are hired for their education and experience but are punished for using it, disengagement isn’t surprising. It’s predictable.

In this conversation, we explore:
• Why expertise is being misinterpreted as disruption
• What leadership fatigue looks like during role transitions
• How fear, ego, and poor perspective-taking shut down engagement
• Why “just because you have the title” doesn’t make you the leader
• The power of perspective-taking in managerial roles
