13. The kiss
August 14th, 1945, also known as V-J Day, or Victory over Japan Day, marked the end of the bloodiest conflict in human history. The picture of this sailor embracing a nurse with amazed onlookers is probably the best example of the joy and relief people felt that day. Can you imagine?

12. Migrant Woman

Another photo from the 1930s, 1936 to be exact. Taken in a camp, 20 miles out of Los Angeles, this photograph put the Great Depression into a perspective anyone could understand. A starving, worried mother, thinking about her children's safety. Anyone can understand that.

11. The Hindenburg

Even though there were dozens of photographers and news agencies trying to capture the moment the Hindenburg, a German passenger zeppelin on its way from Frankfurt was to land in New Jersey, no one expected they would be photographing a tragedy.

The Hindenburg burst into flames as it was preparing to land at the Naval Air Station Lakehurst. This event marked the end of the zeppelin airships, and this photo is the one that has stuck around the longest.

10. First Cell phone image

Have you ever wondered what the first image ever taken and sent on a cell phone was ? Lo and behold ! An inspired programmer at the hospital was trying to figure out how to send pictures of his newborn to friends and family. After a few lines of code, the rest is history.

I wonder if he knows what he started?

9. Conquering the Reichstag

As the Soviet forces advanced into Berlin, the war was still going, even though Hitler had killed himself 2 days earlier. The triumphant soldier waving a Soviet flag over the crumbling Reichstag is a moment that will echo forever. The unbelievable amount of destruction seen in the background gives a glimpse into just how destroyed Europe was in that moment.

8. Muhammad Ali

Talk about being at the right place at the right time, this incredible photo of Muhammad Ali, towering over his opponent Sonny Liston shows a champion. But is the backstory the same as what the picture complains ? Is this a moment of victory, or anger? As it turns out,

Ali is shouting “get up and fight sucker” after Liston went down in the first round from a right hook.

7. Nessie
You must have seen this photo before right? Its the infamous Loch Ness Monster. The stuff of nightmares, It's a toss up between this photograph and the grainy, shaky footage of a Sasquatch for me. Both dubious, and both highly criticized. No matter what though, this photo of “nessie” sparked a multibillion dollar industry of hunting for the unknown.

6. Che

If you haven’t seen this mans face plastered on a shirt before, where have you been hiding? This photograph of Che, Fidel Castro’s young revolutionary ally has been a symbol for many people. Surprisingly, this photograph was taken 7 years before Che Guevara died, but it was only released after his death, as the Cuban regime decided to turn him into the martyr of their cause.

5.Iconic

Michael Jordan and the most famous sports silhouette in history have somewhat of a shaky beginning. This is the original photo that Nike used for reference when it came to designing the jumpman logo. As it turns out, they only paid the photographer $150 to temporarily use the slides from his photoshoot with Michael Jordan. The Air Jordan brand is as popular as ever, earning billions of dollars a year, but the question still remains. Was it fair of Nike to do that ?

4. Man on the Moon

Really, what more can be said about this photograph? Believe it or not, the man in the suit is Buzz Aldrin, the second person to ever step foot on the moon. Neil Armstrong beat him by about 20 minutes. I am sure it was not was not a race to begin with, they are both incredible winners in my book.

Maybe Buzz traded the first steps for the photos, since Armstrong was the one that had camera equipment.

3. Iwo Jima Flag

The capture of Iwo Jima from the Imperial army was one of the most important aspects of the Pacific Theatre, and on February 19, 1945, American troops landed on the islands. After 5 days, U.S. Marines captured Mount Suribachi, and as they raised the American Flag, a photographer captured the moment of triumphant victory.

This image has been reproduced many times, and earned the photographer a Pulitzer prize.

2. The Milkman

Nothing says “just doing my job” as much as this photograph. The milkman, seemingly unphased by the destruction around him keeps going on his daily route. It was men and women like this guy right here that encouraged everyday folk that things will work out in the end. An everyday hero of sorts.
