When training horses (or any animal for that matter… even sometimes humans..) the main way in which horses learn new behaviours is though Operant Conditioning. Two of the main components of Operant Conditioning are Positive Reinforcement and Negative Reinforcement. At ESI, we promote Combined Reinforcement. Here, Dr. Andrew McLean explains what Combined Reinforcement is, and how we can use it in horse training in the form of pressure/release training and the addition of food rewards or scratching / tactile rewards.

What is Equitation Science?
Equitation science promotes an objective, evidence-based understanding of how horses learn, and how to train them accordingly. It promotes the welfare of horses during horse training and competition by applying valid, quantitative evidence-based methods.
