I replaced the original OEM starter relay in my 1979 Dodge Van with a new relay from Standard Motor Products (SR111). Recently had a failure to start. The new relay has already failed with less than 300 starts on it. The contacts will pull in as they should, but the power is not being transferred to the start terminal, which after all is the main point of the device. I ohm'd out the contacts, mounting plates, terminals etc but find no unusual resistance. After fiddling with it unsuccessfully for a while I've decided to trash it.
I opened up the OEM unit from 1979, cleaned it up, put it back together, successfully tested it, and reinstalled it in the van. It's working fine. Worn 1979 starter relay is apparently better than today's new crap. I hate that you can't trust new parts, it complicates the diagnostics and wastes time and money. #diyautorepair #automobile #vanlife
