When on a trip to Sikkim, visit Tsomgo Lake also known as the Changu Lake, a glacial lake in Sikkim. The Sikkimese believe this lake to be a Jhakris, meaning it holds significance as a healing place. The thrill starts from the moment you begin the trek to the lake.
Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake, is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim, some 40 kilometres (25 mi) from the capital Gangtok. Located at an elevation of 3,753 m (12,313 ft), the lake remains frozen during the winter season.
During winters weather in Changu Lake goes down upto -20° c and the area is totally covered with snow and you can get the pleasure of trekking, Yak ride on snow along the coasts of the lake.
Associated with many legends and myths, Tsomgo is revered as a holy lake by the people of Sikkim. Rides on colourfully decorated yaks and mules are offered at the lake site, which also has a variety of eating stalls serving snacks and beverages. Snowboots and gumboots can be hired here.
Winter is also the best time to visit Changu Lake to partake in activities like yak riding and trekking while witnessing the panoramic view of the snow-capped Himalayan range.
Changu Lake remains open as long as weather permits.
Tsomgo (Changu) Lake and Baba Mandir permits are issued at the Police Check Post. Foreigners can also get it at Sikkim Tourism & Civil Aviation Department. Easiest is to apply through a travel agent or tour operator one day in advance.
