This piece was written during the Composition and Performance course in September 2024 as part of the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme, premiered during the Aldeburgh Festival in June 2025.
“Time – perhaps the most enigmatic concept since the dawn of matter – is the subtle rhythm we feel in its passing, capturing the essence of cause and effect. Everything we do is a recurrence of memory, recalling the past while unwittingly gazing toward the future.
Imagine watching a tape: a particle drifts from left to right, then right to left in utter darkness. You would not know which motion moves forward and which rewinds. But replace those movements with the lighting of a candle, and the distinction becomes undeniable. In our vast, visible world, thermodynamics sketches the outlines of what we call time. It is in the warmth (temperature) we feel, in the glow we sense, that past and future (time) unfurl their meaning.” Mingdu Li
