When you’re facing a major decision, walking through uncertainty, or desperate for clarity, you may be asking a simple but profound question: How does God speak today? In this message, When God Uses Other People to Speak Into Your Life, Josh Whelchel explores one of the most overlooked — and most tangible — ways God guides us: through the people He places around us.
Throughout this series, we’ve been learning how to hear God’s voice in a world full of noise. We’ve looked at the most exciting way God speaks through the Holy Spirit, the most personal way through prayer, and the clearest way through Scripture. But this week, we discover that God often chooses to speak through parents, mentors, pastors, friends, small group leaders, and wise believers — sometimes even through people we don’t expect.
Using the story of King Rehoboam in 1 Kings 12, this message highlights three common ways we unintentionally turn down the volume on God’s voice:
-Making decisions in isolation
-Rejecting wisdom from the right people
-Pursuing advice from the wrong people
Rehoboam had access to wise, godly counsel — yet he chose voices that confirmed what he already wanted to hear. The result wasn’t just a bad decision; it led to division, broken leadership, and long-term consequences for an entire nation. His story serves as a powerful warning — and an invitation — for anyone navigating big choices, relationships, finances, parenting, career decisions, or seasons of transition.
This message also offers practical wisdom for discerning who should speak into your life. Not every voice carries the same weight. Scripture reminds us that wise counsel is rooted in two key markers: knowledge of God’s Word and evidence of the fruit of God’s Spirit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Hearing God through others doesn’t mean blindly accepting every opinion; it means intentionally surrounding yourself with wise, godly voices and listening with humility. God doesn’t always shout from heaven; often, He whispers through community.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by choices, unsure who to listen to, or tempted to rely solely on your own instincts, this message invites you to slow down, seek wise counsel, and trust that God is still speaking — sometimes through the people sitting right next to you.
This teaching also points to the importance of biblical community and small groups, where collective wisdom, prayer, and Scripture create space for God’s voice to be heard more clearly. You were never meant to navigate life alone — and God often speaks most clearly when we walk together.
Whether you’re new to faith, returning after time away, or seeking practical guidance for everyday life, this message will encourage you to listen carefully, choose your influences wisely, and pursue Godly wisdom through wise and Godly people.
