Atal Bihari Vajpayee, arguably the greatest of the Indian prime ministers, is no more. The first non-Congress prime minister to complete a full five-year term breathed his last a few minutes past 5 pm today. He was 93. A natural friend of both his admirers and detractors, the former PM was a fine orator, great diplomat and a true statesman. Vajpayee, who is often referred to as the liberal mask of the party, played a distinct role in giving the Sangh and the BJP greater acceptance in Indian politics. Vajpayee shocked the world when he gave the nod for the nuclear tests, braving economic sanctions from the developed countries. Considered to be a liberal among BJP leaders, he also played a crucial role in giving the Indian economy a big push. Be it the first dedicated ministry for divestment, or telecom liberalisation, his reform initiatives stand out.
