The UEFA Champions League champion Chelsea F.C. from England was eliminated in the group stage and therefore compited for the UEFA Europa League reaching the final after losing everything else for what they compited while Benfica SL from Portugal was trying to accomplish a UEFA Europa League, domestic league and domestic cup treble.
The current UEFA Champions League's champion "saved" it's season with this achievement thanks to this late goal of Serbian Branislav Ivanović while this final was three days after Benfica was defeated by F.C. Porto and lost the Portugal's Primeira Liga leadership in the penultimate matchday and was the second bucket of cold water they received in that fateful 2012-13 season were they lost almost everything in the last matches of competition as they will lose the Portuguese Cup final two weeks after.
